On page 9, Megan had to tell how many raccoons babies were girls knowing the number of boys.
On page 9, she had to count by tens to find out how many ears of corn the raccoons ate in 4 nights, if they ate 10 a night.
On page 10, Megan had to count the light rings on a raccoon's tail, add it to the dark rings and find out how many rings total, 7 + 8  or 15 rings in total.
On page 10, She had to add the total raccoons, two were by the stream and three joined them.
On page 11, Megan  had to look at a graph of fish and count the total number of fish the raccoon caught Monday- Thursday and on which day he caught the most.
On page 12, She had to see if the boy had enough money to buy a guinea pig and, if so, how much money he would have left over, $8.00 - $5.00
On page 12, Momma guinea pig had five babies , now how many guinea pigs are in the cage now. This was a trick question and Megan forgot , at first, to count Mom whom did not go anywhere.
On page 13, Megan had to tell how many times a guinea pig turns the wheel if he turns it 5 times every minute and does this for 3 minutes.
On page 13 bottom, Megan had to count the body parts on the guinea pig and she did great. I did not even help her.

Megan had to look at the picture and then fill in the beginning letter missing from its word.
The animals got a certain amount of ribbons. Megan had to color in the number of bars that corresponded to the number of ribbons it earned.  Then, she had to answer which animal received the most ribbons. I asked her how many more that one got than each of the other animals.
Megan and I played go fish for Capital and lower case letters today. Also , we played Bingo with word cards and then we flipped over the bingo cards and played by turning over the word cards one per turn and seeing if the sound of the word on the card matches the a beginning sound on the bingo card.
Megan had to count the items and draw a line between the number of items and the actual number. This must be a first grade thing as math-u-see reviewed it and Brain Quest have it.  She did 6 through 10 nice, but 1-5 was messy. I know she can count this, but I am making her do it again legibly.
Megan had to put in the first letter for the words shown. The section was called beginning letters.  She did fine.
We read this book and then analyzed it to see how we could change the bad events in the story to good points.   Megan now has to write five tips on how Alexander could have a better day.  She did writes couple sentences.  I will get her to write a couple more.

Brain Quest Workbook Grade One

Megan is doing her date and is writing sentences about going to Evelyn Meyer library today to walk a trail.
Okay in this book, she was a bit more challenged.  She did higher order adding problems, such as 9+6, 13+2, etc.  She did have some easier ones, like 5+4 , but their were a good balance.

Math-u-see alpha pages 54-55

On page 54, Megan had to answer adding zero to numbers.  Then, she had to write from 0 to 20 and build some hundreds place numbers using blocks.  Finally she had to know the color of the 7 block , which was tan, and do a word problems where zero was added to three.  Then, She had to continue on page 55 adding zero to numbers like 2 and 4. Then, she had to add zero to 8, 5, 9, and 0, 1, 6, 7 and 3.  This is definitely practice adding zeros time

Megan read a chapter book called Newt

She mostly read this. She still needs help with a few words, like curtains (which she reads as shutter).

Shapes in the Sky by Josepha Sherman

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Last night we read this books related to clouds. Shapes in the sky talked about the different kinds of clouds and their description and also how the wind moves the clouds and makes  lots of neat shapes out of them. We have a much  more thorough book on clouds, but this was one was nice and brief.

Explode the Code, Book 2, pages 74-75

Storm in the night by Mary Stoltz

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
This is a story about a boy and his grandfather, where the boy obviously lives with his grandfather.   This book talks about heightened senses when one of your five is lessened.  In this story, the boy is unable to see as the electric goes out during the storm, he can hear better. So, he listens intently to the sounds both inside and out of his house. This leads to a discussion about Onomatopoeia, in which a word makes the sound of the object when you say it, like bong, bong, bong, or ribbit , ribbit, ribbit, clonk clonk , or ticktock, ticktock, etc.  We discussed this before in another story and again now.

Fear:

This book brings up to the topic to a child that fear is normal and that fear can be overcome..  This comes about because the grandfather was once afraid of the lightning and thunder of storms, but one day he had to face his fear when he left his dog Marvin out in a storm.  He had to be brave to leave underneath his bed to go to the door and let his dog in.

It also brought up a lesson discussed in a very first, last time, where , when you are afraid , it can make you forget about everything else.  Sometimes when I have to drive at night, I get soooo afraid, I forget to think about the roads and how to get back.  Once I gain control, I am able to do this better.

Language: Contrast

We also talked about the descriptive language and contrasting language in the beginning and end of the book, like in the beginning there was "Thunder like mountains blowing up initially , to mutterings of thunder in the end of the story.

Language : Italics

We discussed Italics and how they add emphasis to the words. I also discussed how , to do this in writing, you underline the words you want to emphasize.  Megan, when she sentences tomorrow, is going to apply some of these techniques.

Science:

We discussed the clouds and thunder some. We are going to read books on these topics as well this week.

Pattern Play

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Megan is exploring the product pattern play.

We went to Leslie's today and she had an activity where she spread out different kinds of animals from different habitats.  she took turns asking the kids questions about the various animals, things like what animal create a cocoon at night to sleep in (the Parrotfish) . We learned what animals are monoptremen (duck billed platypus and the spiny anteater).
Megan had to answer how many seals are resting on the ice.  Then, on page 5, she had to look at a graph of adult and baby seals (called pups) and she had to count them each and tell which one has more.

Farm Fresh Addition

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
In my pre-laminated Kindergarten games there is an addition game in which you turn over the cards and you take turns to answer the addition problems. On the board, each space has two answers, like 5 and 10, and 6 and 8. You move your counter to the next spot that has your sum. The first person to the finish line wins. But, there is no way to get to the finish line. So, Megan and I are going to add a pumpkin card that if you get it, you go automatically to finish. We also are going to add carrots and if you get one of them, then you go back to start.  Secondly, we make bar graphs while we play and see who gets the most/least of the farm foods.  Then, we put them all together at the end, and observed that there are the same amount of cards for each of the vegetables and eggs.  Also, when we added up the total individual items, they all added up to 45 items, like 45 broccoli, 45 corn, 45 eggs, 45 tomatoes.  This was interesting to us. We played this game several times.

On the top of page 17, Megan had to count the money and write down the amount.  She did this amazingly well.  On the top of page 18, Megan had to read the sentence and chose the word that best completes it. Again, she did this fine. Lastly , on page 19, was money again and she had to choose the money combination that would by the item on the left. For example, the plane cost 47 cents. She had to draw a line to the set of the coins on the right that added up to this amount.  On the bottom of page 19, she had to read the ruler measuring the items given. What Megan did first was measure her pencil in both inches and centimeters with a ruler.
On page 16, Megan did some alphabetizing. Though this is a first to second grade book, I learned, as I have known, that Megan needs practice in this area.  So, for now on, we are going to use a dictionary.

We took a hike at Randolph Carter and we closely at the animals that were there.  We saw what was under decaying wood, termites, cockroaches. We looked at Fungus and moss, and Lichen. Oh and also mushrooms.  We also found a slug. We discussed what a Ravine is as Donna called the body of water at Randolph Carter a ravine.  It was fun. The kids swung on a tree that was hanging low. They looked like monkeys.  We discussed monkeys in trees.

Megan had to count the blocks , add zero to them and write down how many they are. Then, she had to find the matching blocks on the right and color them as well. Then, she had to do several problems dealing with adding zero to a number.

Bug Out

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Megan and I brought big , fake insect, laminated pictures of insects, insect coloring pages and lots of insect books. We met at Evelyn Meador library and taught the kids about insects.  Megan knows soooo much already, she was ready to help in the field identify bugs.  But, instead she studied fiddler crabs. Her mommy taught about bugs. I hunted for them on the trail before the table in the end at the butterfly trail. I was nervous at first , but soon felt at ease and taught them a lot. We taught what a true bug is, how to tell an insect is an insect, how spiders and crabs are related to insects (all arthopods), etc. I then read All about bugs by Dr. Seuss. I also read a book called hairy and scary bugs. It shows up close pictures of insects and their scary parts.

Seeing is believing - Dot to Dot with Seurat

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Today we learned about Seurat and pointillism.   Basically, Seurat liked one to look at his painting from a distance and  he would put primary colors close together and then your eye would combine them to see the mixture of colors. This day, DJ made a neat pointilism picture to show us. We didn't guess what she wanted it to be, but nonetheless it was very pretty. The kids then started dipping pencil erasers into the paint and putting dots on their paper to form their own pointillism picture of their own. They came out really neat.

Fruits and such

We went here with the meetup and we learned about different kinds of squash. We picked squash, tomatos, and other vegetables. The kids saw a rabbit, crickets and the place raises catfish to eventually eat in the next year or two, so the kids were able to feed the catfish at dusk.
France:
Puss n' boot
Megan and I read these three stories, discussing cunning, clever , wit and what exactly is a fairytale. She had no idea about what a fairytale, but knew some about what it is to be cunning and clever.  In Puss n' boot,
a guy is left a cat for his inheritance but this is no ordinary cat.  First he can talk and understand people. Second, he is very cunning and clever.   He first caught lots of animals that can be eaten for food and gave them to the King of the land saying these are from the Lordship Marquis De Carabas. He does this for a while to get the King to really  know this Lord and to like him. Then, he has the boy pretend drowning in the river and then hides his clothes. He does this knowing the King is going to come by at any moment. When he does, he tells the King the Lordship Marquis of Carabas is drowning and that someone stole his clothes.  The King has his men get him out and has his best tailors get him a really nice suit. Then, the cat goes ahead to all the lands and tells the people if they do not say this land is owned by the Lordship Marquis of Carabas, they will all be turned into sausagemeat.  Afraid of this, the people listened. The cat goes to the castle of a big ogre who owns the castle and all the land and tricks him. He is able to change forms and so he first turns into a Lion and the cat is frightened. But, he then tells the ogre, after he changes back, that he can not change into something really tiny, say a rat or a mouse. He proves it to him that he can and when he does, he is eaten.  When the king sees how much land this Lordship owns and his castle at the end, he tells the Lordship Marquis of Carabas, he can marry his daughter if he wishes. And so he marries her.

Br'er Rabbit gets Br'er Fox's food - Southern states of America
In Br'er Rabbit, the Rabbit wants Br'er fox's food, but is not sure how to get it. He sees him hammering nails into his roof and so he goes up and pretends he is truly helping him and hammers like crazy. It sounds like he is avoiding the fox's tail, but in the end, he nails it down.  Then, he starts acting like he feels bad about it as he climbs down the ladder and goes to eat his food.

West African tales
In Anansi, this is a tricky , clever , cunning spider needs to capture three things in order to please the sun god and get ownership of all the stories. He tricks the hornets, the python and the leopard and , as a result, gets the right to owner ship of all stories.  After this, Megan wrote up a sheet with a description of the spider and two things he does.   She drew a picture of the spider. At the top, She writes the character and the Title of the story.  Then, she is going to hide the top with construction paper and one has to guess what story she is taking about with her clues.

Jack in the beanstalk

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
We read Jack and the beanstalk by Steven Kellogg.  We characterized Jack as Brave, but he also showed attributes of being clever and maybe a bit cunning or sneaky. He was brave in that he climbed the tall bean stalk and face an mean looking later and went into the house an ogre when he could have been eaten.  Each time he does, he manage to take some of the ogre wealth. The first was a bag of gold, the second was a golden hen, and finally he took a harp. After this last time, he had to cut the plant down because the ogre was after him.  Upon returning the second and third , he shows signs of clever or cunning. The second time, he avoids knocking.  When he sees the lady, she says didn't I see you before. My master has this problem about a missing bag of gold. He tells her , I might know something but I can't tell you until my stomach gets full.  So she lets him in and gives him something to eat.

Megan wrote a letter to the character Jack telling him that she liked the story. She also told him which part of the story she likes best, which was when he believed the elderly guy and traded a good milking cow for 5 beans.

Laminated Morning Routine Form

Summer Bridge Activities Pages 11-12

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Megan looked at the coins and added up the count.   She read a set of words and listened for the short vowel and wrote it down. She also wrote the letter the word begins with.  Then there were several rows of words and at the beginning of each row was a word and Megan had to select the words from that row that rhymes with the first word. I asked her how you know it rhymes and she said based on the words having the same ending.  Then, following directions, Megan drew a picture of a girl sitting on a rock and a bird up in a tree and flower. She even built a nest for the bird. She titled it bird in a nest . She put an egg in the nest.
Megan is starting Critical Thinking's First grade Mathematics book.  I have loved all their critical thinking book's in the logic area so far and so I am curious what this book is like. I will use it to supplement my other math sources.

Page One, there are circles with a certain number of stars in it and a clock in the middle and Megan has to count the stars and draw a line to the correct number on the clock structure.  On Page 2, Megan has to fill in the missing number according to the pattern that is being given, by 1's, 2's, odd numbers, descending down from 15, and normal counting.  On page 3, Megan has to read the numbers, up to twenty, in words and draw a line to the numbers on the other side. She did this very well.

Megan had to fill in the missing numbers when they started with 1-24, then 31-50 and then 75-101.

Then, she had to look at a picture and circle the word that spells what it is , like a picture of a can of soda gave can or cane, or pan and pane for a frying pan.

On page 10, Megan had to practice writing her name two times.  Then, she had to finish the punctuation as she read 10 sentences. She needed to put in a question mark, period or exclamation mark accordingly.

Summer Bridge activities Pgs. seven and eight

On page 7 she had to either read a clock and write down the time, or draw the hands on the clock if given the time digitally.  I had to remind her that the minutes are on 12 for the exact hour . She knows the short hand is the hour and the long hand is minutes.  She had to read a word and write down the long vowel that she heard.  On page 8, she had to read the sentences with Mommy's help and put them under the picture.  Then, she has a picture and two words. She had to see what the picture is and pick the right spelling. She did great at this and the long vowels discussed above.

Bayou Wildlife Park

We went to this park in Alvin that has lots of big Animals. I probably cannot remember their names, but we learned about the animals and what countries they came from.  We saw bactrian Camel (2 humped), Axis Deer, Wildebeast, Zebra, Giraffes, Pygmy Goat, Bentang Cattle, White Rhino (really grey- not named for their color), Gaur Cattle, Musk Ox, and Gnu among many others.  We also learned a bit about where they come from, though I do not remember.
Megan was elated when, in one of their fresh water ecosystems, she saw a soft-shell turtle. This was her first time seeing one in nature, although I do not know if the people put it there or it was there naturally.

Music and more art Class

In this class, Megan's knowledge of primary to secondary colors was reinforced as they cut out and painted butterlies. I think they painted half a butterfly one color and half another and then folded it over and mixed the primary colors to make secondary colors.  There is other things and I will ask the teacher on Monday.
Megan is still learning how to keep rhythm and is learning about 1/4 notes and 1/8 notes.  The kids , for the 1/8 notes are running to fast.  After 30 minutes, they have the parents come in and usually we do some sort of musical activity. This week we danced to a song with scarves, she likes to do this.  Last week this was to a "A Tisket , A Tasket", a green and yellow, I wrote a letter to my love and on the way I dropped it, I dropped it".  Anyway, then we , using a parachute, marched around to a particular beat.  I will better record the songs next time.

Explode the Code - book 2- pages 72-73

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
On  page 72, Megan has to read the words and pick out the word that matches the picture. It is a picture of a bell and she gets the choices of belt or bell. She has to do a page of problems like this. Then, on the next page, she is given a list of words at the top, and she is given pictures and next to the picture she has to write what the picture is, using the word list at the top. She does this really well. I usually walk away and let her do it. This tells me she is learning to spell and write and read from this one program.
Megan did these two math word  problems orally tonight.  Both were addition problems .  1+2 = 3 and 1+1+1+1=4
Megan started this book which was a gift from Mojgan in our homeschooling group. I still want her to do my academic material , but I will supplement with this like every other day.

It is geared for 1st to 2nd graders but I want it to be challenging. I may look at the kindergarden one.

Today she worked with ordinal numbers, circled the letter of the beginning sound, wrote out her capital letters, and wrote in the vowel that completes the word.

Starting a Weather Unit

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
This week and future weeks, we will be doing some science projects related to the weather. Today, we learned the term atmosphere, troposphere.  We also learned how the atmosphere from first formed. The earth was very hot and, as it cooled, it gave off gases (called degassing) and then it began to rain. It rained for like thousands of years and then, the residual water in the air (water vapor) formed the clouds we see today .We are reading about hurricanes and learned air pressure systems what cause hurricanes and the terms, eye of the storm and storm surge.  We read about the  hurricane of 1938, in which they did not have modern technology to help predict where the storms are going to land. They thought this storm was going back out to see, but it didn't and it long island sound and killed lots of people and took down houses, boats, trains, anything in its path. And then later it pushed these things against the land.

Hermit crabs

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Megan got some hermit crabs and is studying him and making observations.   The bigger one is red and she says the little ones legs are starting to get red as well.  She says the claws are so sharp that they feel like needles.  Yesterday, it was neat to see one of the come completely out of his shell.   We thought we had to run and buy a new one , but it turns out he went right back into it.  They climb on each other to try to get out.
We are in the process of doing a first grade lesson plan comparing various folk tales.  Today we talked about Bravery and "The boy at the Dike" and "Hansel and Gretel". The boy at the Dike is a Dutch Fairy Tale from Holland. They build dikes to protect their houses from the water and all kids are taught from a young age to observe the walls for leaks. Well, one day, a boy peter is out visiting a friend and when he comes back he notices a  hole in the wall. He plugs it up with his finger and waits  until someone comes by. No one does, despite his shouting for help. The next day a farmer sees  him and the boy asks him for help.  He goes to get help and the boy is declared a hero of the town.  So, we discussed that this boy was brave because of this action and that he stayed that way throughout the store.  Hansel and Gretel is well known story about these two kids who are abandoned in the woods and tricked into going to an evil witch's house. She tries to fatten up Hansel and cook both of the kids. They soon realize this and Gretel, who was initially scared and helpless, shoves the old witch into the oven when she was going to put her in it. The boy was brave from the beginning and worked hard to calm down his sister . When the witch was checking his finger to see if he was plump enough, the boy tricked her and stuck a chicken bone out through the cage openings rather than his finger. He had been put in a cage to be fattened up.  So, we talk about the sister's transformation and about Hansel's bravery from the beginning and his resourcefulness, like when he started dropping crumbs so they could find their way back home).
Well, today we only did the daily date and day of the week. But she did this and wrote two sentences about her caterpillar turning into a cocoon as we think it is a moth. It was a caterpillar Bo (Mina's  husband) found on one of his fruit trees or her plants.

Megan's tooth was discovered loose

Today, when we were working, Megan's front tooth looked weird. I asked her to show me her tooth and it turned out its loose and coming out.
The Alpha book is reviewing earlier concepts. Today, Megan practiced adding zero to a number.  She then had two number problems which, in the end, were practicing adding 0 to a number as well.  This was true for both pages. Megan did not feel like coloring this day and so she skipped page 49. We will come back to it.
Megan had to trace the letters on page 166 and color the picture that begins with the letter in the box, like for Tt, she had to color a turtle, and for Qq, she had to color the quilt, not the lobster.  On page 167, Megan had to draw a line between a picture and its matching beginning letters, this time Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy, and Zz.
Megan is working on learning Long Vowels. Today she did letter I as in Dime. She is also learning that when words end in "e", in cvce words (where c = consonant and V is vowel). Today she had to circle the words with the long I sound ( page 152) and then color the kites (page 153) that had three words with the long I sound that rhyme.
There is a number of blocks on the left. She has to count and write that number down. Then, she has to add zero to it and then find the number, which is the same as the starting number in this case, on the right.

Last Spanish Class for the Semester

As we walked in late to our Spanish Class with Mrs. Tabina, we saw only one other girl.  Tabina said that a lot of the kids were not here today and that Bryce is in California.  Julie hadn't been there in a while and she was not sure why.  So, we walked in and she handed us out a book of body parts and we went over that. Then, she played a game of Simon Says where she practiced action words, colors, size, and other spanish words. Then, she practiced verb changes with them.  As we were doing this, I realized how much we had learned. I also realized readinga_z.com has Spanish books I can print out to practice with Megan. This Bay Area learning Center is going to have a summer long Spanish Class and when I find out when it is, I am going to put Megan and I into it. As we both are picking up Spanish.

Megan was offered to try the Girls Art Class that meets right after her music class. She was thrilled and said "I love Art". She had a great time and the teacher really liked her , so I enrolled her to continue taking the class this summer. Today she did a sun and made the rays coming out of the sun. She did this with magazine paper. Then, using letters found in a magazine , she spelled out her name.  Then, under the sun, she placed green paper to refer to the sun as setting below the horizon.

Today, Megan went to her first music class at Music and More. The summer class called Music and More. Here, she learned how to walk and run in the rhythm of 1/4 and 1/8 notes. Later, they will jump to a half note.  They did this by walking as she beat on a drum, first 1/4 note walking and then 1/8 notes running.  Then, she also taught them bubble hands, where you put out your hands with your fingers curved and pointing up and then flip them over to play the piano. This is done to help the kids learn to keep their hands up in the correct position while hitting the keys on the piano.

On Page 61, Megan has to the read all the words in a row of words and then X the word that is the same as the beginning word.  They are learning ending sounds, like st, sk mp, etc.
On page 69, Megan had to pick the letter combination that gives the word shown, like -nt for ant, -ft for lift, -nt for tent, , -lt for belt.  This was fun doing with her.

Megan is given hundreds, tens and ones blocks and has to write and say the resulting number, 357.  Then, she has to write out the numbers 1-20 again.  Then, she has to put the  blocks down on a space, count them, write the number and color the spaces to match the associated blocks and this was done for numbers 1-10.   Then, using the pink block, she had to measure a few lines, one where the dividers between individual pink blocks had to be drawn by her.  Then, she had to answers questions regarding the lines, How long is the shortest line ? How long is the longest line? Then, she took a pink block and started measuring items around the house, but soon realized a longer block would be easier, so she took the 10 block (dark blue).

Making a Catapult

So yesterday, We bought two side supports for the catapult (15 inches long, pine wood)  and then we bought a longer piece of pine for the swinging arm and it was 2 feet in length. We also bought metal triangular pieces (pictures later) to make the sides of the catapult.  We also bought hooks to attach a rubber band to this swinging arm. Yesterday, we marked holes on these three pieces of wood one inch a part, in all but the base piece.

Megan's morning story

So, there was a turtle who lived in a pond. The pond is quickly drying up. The turtle will have to move from the pond, but there was a person who wants to sell them at a pet store. So, they can not leave the water. Also there is a dog and a cat that keep watch at night, so escape at this time is impossible.  If the cat or the dog sees them, they come barking or scratching at the door. So they must sneak a way through the bushes. They did this in the early dawn, because this was when no one was watching as this is when the cats and dogs got their sleep. They also slept some in the daytime too.  But the dog would wake instantly to any suspicious sounds, even we can't hear.  Also, the dog has a fine tuned sense of smell and can detect the smell of turtle.
