So, fred did not know how to play with his new dog Ralph, but in the end they drew together, Ralph just drying his footprints. Betty came to say that him and Alexander can't have dogs in there apartment. As a result, they brought all 29 to Fred. Including Betty and Alexander , Kingie, Fred and the 30 dogs, this was 15 + 14 + 1 + 2 + 2 in Fred's office, or 34 people. When Betty and Alexander left, this became 34 - 2 or 32 inhabitants. Fred has no idea about dogs . He tries to teach them Chemistry and have them draw and play a tea party. All the dogs wanted to do was bark and neighbor teachers were starting to complain. Kingie was hiding in his house and flew him planes telling him that need to eat, drink and be taken to the potty. Kingie learned they have to be walked as he soon smelled something.
Megan's questions were : 5 hours to walk all the dogs and they have to be walked twice a day, how many hours must spend walking the dogs each day : 5 + 5 or 5 times 2.
2). Each dog requires a $2 license. Thirty times 2 is the same as 2 times 30 by the _________________ law of multiplication.
3. Two times 30 means 30 + 30.
30 + 30 =
In this chapter, Alexander and Betty each took 15 dogs home from the shelter. Fred went and met them there, after he realized they adopted the dogs. The author then added up all the people and dogs leaving the shelter, 15 + 15 +2 +1 = 33 He talked about how Fred did not know how to car for a dog and that dogs are much more sociable than cats as the dog he was given to walk pulled him towards the other 30-1 = 29 dogs. Fred was given the dog to keep. Kingie asked to himself lots of things about Fred and whether or not he knew how to take care of dogs.
In Megan's turn to play , she had to
1) Name the largest cardinal number less than 10? 9
2) what is the smallest ordinal number? first
3) How many dogs does Betty have right now? 14
4) What is the total number of dogs that Alexander and Betty have right now? 29 ( she at first said she had thirty and lost one so she had 29 and then I showed her how to show this with numbers).
5) What number doubled gives you 18? 9
Today, in honor and to study Pirates, we took a ferry across galveston island to Fort Travis Seashore Park on the Bolivar Penisula. We went to see this fort , which by the look of it, it will not be standing forever. It is being overrun by nature and is not being cared for. This was my impression. We learned that this fort has a lot of history associated with it, such as protecting the Spanish from the Karanakawa indians , Defense in the Spanish-American War, and defense during WW1.
We learned about Dr. Long and his wife and daughter and 300 troops, who came to Texas in 1818 to help defend Texas against Spain. His daughter was left behind with very little defense and they left when the weather got cold. She fired a canon every day to give the impression that the fort was defended. Jane, in December, after her maid became very sick, delivered her third child, a girl named Mary and she was the english descent. Jane long, because of her perserverence and dedication, became known as the "Mother of Texas". Jane left the following July after hearing about the death of her husband.
During the civil war, fortifications on Bolivar Point was Fort Green, for the Confederate Soldiers.
Megan and I are slowly studying weather as we learn about the greenhouse effect.
We were doing lifeof Fred and the book, chapter 13 dogs, talked about the hanging garden of Babylon. I did not have a book, so we watched a utube video on them. I will try to add it later for reference.
Yesterday we did a little map work and put the capital of Sumer on the map. I finally understand that people from Sumer are called Sumerians. read about the Sumerians and their trading practice. We learned that they traded with the
Megan had to look at the word and cross out the pictures it describes. Then, she has to write the word. She wrote smog, slap, snap, plum, slam, slop, and smell.
Megan on page 56, learned about rivers and the parts of a river. She learned about the source, that streams flow into the river, and the mouth of the river. She also learned that the land along the side of a river is called a bank. On page 57, Megan looked at St. Lawrence River on a big map in the school room upstairs. We found the source and the mouth of the St.Lawrence river. It is also in the book, Minn on Mississippi. A book we are reading about a Snapping Turtle moving along the Mississippi River.
Yesterday,we did a lesson in our character development phase. It was on manners and politeness. We had the kids stay downstairs , while Leslie and I discussed and prepared upstairs. We discussed the books, decided to have them practice acting out situations, like how to properly answer a phone or door. The kids were really responsive to setting the table. We had a large bulletin with a drawing of how to set up your plate, spoon, fork, napkin, knife and cup and so the kids could follow it. They did this and then a few kids went downstairs came back up and we acted out how to properly greet them. Then, we were able to really greet some new members.
Megan , on page 30, Megan had to answer a word problem with llamas. They used four llamas as guides and each one could carry 100 lbs. How much weight could they carry in all. Then, one guide owns 11 llamas . If seven are used, how many are left. On page 31, she did the problem wrong, but we redid it together. If was a 4 times 4 multiplication problem basically, so we counted by 4s together. Its a little hard for her yet, but I like the exposure.
Today, we constructed a paper version of a pop-up ziggurat.
Today we bought some and used some boxes they we already had and started stuffing these boxes to construct a Ziggurat.
On page 91, Megan has to do addition with Math-u-see blocks, adding two to various numbers. She has to count the number of blocks, color them the right color, Do the addition and then draw a line to the answer on the right . On page 94, Megan has to add 2 to various number and do adding in the 10s and 100s place value adding a value having 2, like 20 + 60. Then, Megan had to do addition problems having to do with adding 2 to a number. She is good at these.
On the left Megan is given words for items in a kitchen and she has to draw a line from them to the actual item in the kitchen. Megan did this and all other pages by herself.
Megan is given a list of place names, beach, city, town, lake , farm, etc and then on the next page she is given sentences and has to use one of the words in the blanks provided for each.
Okay Megan is given a bunch of sentences to read and an incomplete one. First, she reads each one and, inferring from the picture given as well as the sentence she read, she has to finish the sentence next to it with one of the two word choices given. This was new to her.
The new words are used in a sentence and Megan has to point to the picture that shows what is happening in the picture.
Megan read the first part of the story and on the page following is given sentences. If she can answer yes, she draws a smiley face, if the answer is no, she draws a sad face, can't tell, she draws a face with a straight mouth. At the end, Megan has to tell Mrs. Pim what to give Zack to eat.
On this page, Megan learns words for the story Zack the Dog Part 1. Words: play, stay, day, eat, tail, why, gives. Then, on page 3, she has to read the sentence and draw a line from the sentence to the correct picture.
Megan read a bunch of word families and had to circle the parts of the words that were the same in each set, word families for ask, o, ell, e, ag, and ust.
Measuring pencils. We used a ruler and measured these pencils, putting the flat side of the pencil eraser on the zero mark on the ruler. Like the lines in the previous page, we had fun guessing the lengths of the various pencils.
Megan, using a cm rule, measured the lines shown. After a bit, we played a game of guessing the length. This was fun to do. When she runs out of these, I will do more of them.
Megan worked on the 3, 7, 10 family and then did some three number math with rods (I like this ideas). The rods were 5, 2, 3 and 10. I made problems such as 2+5 = what - what. They had her solve a similar problem and others of equation equality, like 10-5 = 2+ 3.
New words are introduced. They show how to spell it , like come = cum and then use it in a sentence. Then, Megan has to write that word.
On the top of page 12, Megan is shown two words and the contraction they make. She then has to cancel out any letters in the original word that is not used in the contraction. Then, on the bottom, Megan has to read sets of word families, circling the parts of the words that are the same.
Megan has to read a list of words and add a word that has the same rhyming pattern. She added a lot of words beginning with the letter "b".
Today, we went to Bayou Bend Gardens and Museum. It was really neat. There was an outdoor garden with historical greek figures like Diane (Artemis), Cupid, Cherubs, and Euterpe. Then we went into
On page 28, Megan is given two types of hogs and their weights, 520 (giant forest) and (20) pgymy hog and is asked how much less does the pygmy weigh. She was stumped , but I reminded her of her houses and that you are only subtracting from the 10s place and none from the hundreds or units. if you take 20 from 520, you get what. She figured out 500. The next one she did easy. There were 6 warhogs running into the clearing . If each has two tusks, how many tusks were there in all. The next problem was a three number addition. She had to add up six males, seven females, and ten piglets. How many were in the herd was the question. She did this herself and came to the right answer of 12.
Megan was given a word list of supplies to build a bird house. She had to use these words in the missing blanks in the sentences given. She did this well. The words were hammer, saw, nails and wood.
Megan was given the word cards for various animals up top and then she had to write the proper animal word beneath a picture of this animal. She commented Mom this is too easy. I know , but I turned in the kindergarden book for the first grade book.
Megan had to read a list of words, pronouns, and then use them properly in the sentences given, that is fill in the blanks of sentences with the appropriate word.
His Their Her Its
Megan has to read the question and think about an answer, such as name one thing you can hug, Name a thing that has 4 legs but is not a dog, Why is Miss Pim sad, etc.
Megan has to read the words and write down the letter that ends that word (page 18). On page 19, She has to do the same thing, but with items found at the beach.
On page 86, She counts by 10s, then does four simple addition problems. Then, she writes her numbers from 0-100 on page 87. On page 89, she connects the dots by 10s for a image of an apple.
On page 4, We described some shapes and counted the number of corners and then how many are square corners. Then, on page 5, we counted sides of the shapes and then how many were the same length.
This is for grades 2-3 so at some point, it will get too hard. I have to order the answer book for it.
On page 85, Megan counted by 10s, from 10- 100 and then did 4 simple addition problems. On page 86, she wrote out the numbers from 0-100.
After the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory, we went to Brazoria Wildlife Refuge. When, we got there, it looked really dry , so we dropped our guard against mosquitoes. At first we walked a very short observation deck and, out in the distance, it looked like a desert because of the color and short bush like plants. Then, we drove on , and we saw a lot of water after this, first puddles and a beach like place. We saw the latter on a small trail. While we were on the trail, Winston left the windows open and either we brought them back with us, or they crawled into the car, but we were loaded with ticks everywhere. Megan, at first, noticed one on a paper towel. They were on me at first, on my belly. We stripped in the bathroom and checked ourselves. Then, we drove , and each time, we kept noticing them, on my forehead, crawling on the upholstery of the car, on the ceiling of the car, on my hat and inside the flap part, on Daddy's hat , on Daddy jeans, etc. They were everywhere. Megan had two on her head later when she woke up from a nap. I mean, it was a great day despite this.
This was a Saturday Meetup at the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory in Lake Jackson, Texas. The drive there in itself was fun. We talked , listened to Chinese and Children's music and made a good day out of it. When we got there and finally watched what they were doing, they had only two birds left, but what I didn't know, is that they would be bringing more. So, we saw a humming bird and a cardinal and then they went to show us the nets that they catch them with. Then , we came back to the table and saw quite a few more birds. We learned about humming birds- how they weigh between a penny and a nickel, between 2-3 grams and 6 grams. They measure the tiny hummingbirds by putting them in a black hollow tube. They weigh more when they are migrating and they have a nice plump body. This is the fat and energy they will use on their migration. Then, we learned how to tell a male and a female cardinal apart shortly after birth. The male will have some red on his chest early on and black on the top front part of his head, above the beak. The female will not have any of these. Cardinals are born with a black beak, which slowly turn red. This last feature can be used to tell the age of any sex of Cardinal, by the degree or amount of black that is left. He was able to calm the cardinals down for a short period of time by waving his finger back and forth, sort of like a hypnosis. Actually, one of the first two birds we saw was a painted bunting. It is a grey bird with a green chest (blue and red if male) if memory serves me right. The next was a acadian fly catcher and this bird was studied for a long time to determine which one it was. Apparently, they live in two different areas and have a breeding time specific to the type of flycatcher and since this bird did not have any feathers molting, they knew it was not a recent hatchling and so it must be acadia. Also, it had a wider beak. They measured the distance the tip of the beak and nares was 9, and was a value in which it could have been either species. Another one we saw was the water thrush, this one and the Acadian flycatcher migrate and are not full time residents. As a result, they do not need to put on extra body fat. By the way, these people measure fat on a scale of 0-5, which 0 meaning no observable body fat. They do this using there eyes and they blow on the belly of the bird.
Another bird we saw with beautiful brownish-red feathers was a Carolina Wren. Another one we saw, and Megan released, was a Chick a Dee.
Today, we learned about Mexico. We learned about Mexico's past, the Mayans and the Aztecs , the indians and about the country itself. We learned about the penisulas, about when the parts of the Mexico were annexed by the United states, and we learned about the life in mexico, though modern, they still use adobe brick and mud and straw houses as they keep them cooler. We discussed how this would be good for us as its hot in Texas. We discussed their foods and the love of hot peppers, or spicy food.
Megan went over clocks with Leslie who had drawn a clock on one half an egg and a time on the other side. Then, she broke them apart and they had to find the matches. They tried to do this with my word eggs but apparently I put too many words on one egg, making it really difficult. Then, we played launch it, a word family tile game.
Megan had to first define a river , lake and an ocean for me. Then, I read the definitions. Then, she had to glue the right picture below the right word. We counted the five oceans on the map, pointed out some rivers and discussed some of these Megan has seen in real life.

Megan had to read each word shown and if she heard a hard "c" she drew a line to the country and if she heard a soft "c", she draws a line to the city.
Megan did pages E-8 and E-9, dealing with math addition families, 3, 4, and 7 and 5, 3 and 8. She also did page A-10 and A-11. On these pages we talked about the number line and on page A-12, we discussed how different number lines can have different distances between the number, but on the same number line, the distant should be the same.
Megan did two word ladders today, pages 39-40
Megan, using rods, answered problems associated with 3, 4, and 7. On page E-9, she answered questions related to 3,5 and 8 using rods.
Megan counted by 10's on page 80 and wrote out her numbers, 0-100 on page 81.
To help Megan relate to things that happened long ago, she filled out some boxes related to her life and times. She answered things such as yesterday, today and tomorrow. Then last year, this year and next year, and then past , present and future. This activity will help her when we talk of past historical events.
On page 24, Megan had to read the words and color the words that have the short A sound.
Megan and I read Rosie's walk , a book about a fox chasing a hen. In this story, there is a lot of prepositions and cause and effect. Megan chose the fox bumping into a set of bee hives. This caused the bees to chase the fox, while the hen walks quietly away under the bee hives. We also discussed the characteristics of the fox and the hen.
Megan had a lot of questions. Megan had to figure out the day and the month for the day after the current day but asked like this, if yesterday was Monday , what day is it tomorrow.
On all these pages, Megan first has to fill in the blanks for counting by 10s, then on the next page she has to write out numbers from 0-100. This was done on August 4th, 2013 to August 15th, 2013.
On page 78, Megan had to count by 10s, from 10 to 60. On page 79, Megan had to write her numbers from 0-100. This is why I am letting her do this every other day. So , she doesn't get burned out doing that.
Megan did a cut and paste of a picture of a canyon and a valley after I asked her which one was which. When, she got it, she was then able to paste them onto a sheet showing the definitions.
Megan, starting at 2+1, had to add a one to every number up to 9, which equals 10. She has no trouble with +1 math. On page 77, Megan had to write her numbers from 0 up to 99. I definitely feel this is good practice. She will be doing the latter of these activities several more times in this book.
Megan did word ladders starting with the word mop, top, hop , hog, and jog. On page 36, it started with stop, then to shop, then to hop, hot, cot.
Megan had to differentiate between Canyons and valleys. I had her describe them and pick the right picture of one. Then, she had to glue it to the box labeled with the name of it. She did this two weeks ago, I believe. Page 52, talks about the Grand Canyon and 53 tales about Yosemite.
On pages 166-167 Megan had to drawn a line between numbers 1-6 on the bottom to the stages in the hatching of a chicken egg from egg to chick walking around. On pages 168-169, she had to do the same thing but from a seed packet to the flowering of a sunflower plant.
Megan read The fox and the hound hide and seek. She also read Rainbow fish finds his way.
On these two pages, Megan had to sort the pictures of the scenes on each page. Page 162, were the steps in flying a kite, on page 163, were the steps involved in building a club house.
On page 165, This was a more complicated scene to put in the right order. It had six pictures and one of them stumped both of us.
Megan had to add the ending letters to the words in the crime scene in the "Who Made this Mess" brain quest pages 48-49.
today we took and put a black piece of construction paper in the sun and checked its temperature by picking up after one minute and 5 minutes. It was definitely warmer after 5 min but after another 5 minutes or so, it did not feel warmer. I want to have her , in the future, compare black to white construction paper.

Why is it warmer in summer and milder in winter near the ocean than inland? We did an experiment where we put a glass of water in the fridge and an empty glass in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. The empty glass was getting cold and the one with water still felt warm. The book says that air and glass lose their heat quicker than water and and water does not let the cold air in and the water keeps the glass warmer longer. We were able to get the same results for this one.
Megan had to make a percussion instrument for Music class and she had a rainstick craft she needed to do. So, she did this today and decorated it with stickers.
