Comparing fairy tales- Rapunzel and sleeping beauty

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Today, megan and I read two fairytales, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. Rapunzel was written by Paul O. Zelinsky and Sleeping beauty was written by Jane Yolen .We then wrote up the beginning, middle and the end for rapunzel. Then we read sleeping beauty and did a venn diagram comparing the two stories as they had some similiarities. Finally, megan took strips with the story parts for sleeping beauty and is pasting them in the right order. I have to do this for rapunzel for her.
Megan and I are studying Inertia by putting a index card over a glass and then a penny, nickel or dime over it. Then you snap the card with your fingers in a straight manner and the index card slips out from under the coin and gravity causes it to fall into the cup. Megan got this to work with more than one coin (2 coins).

clues about Cats.

There is a picture of a bunch of cats at various places along a fence, next to a bush and or a tree, etc. Megan was given clues and with these clues she had to place the number of the clue that matched the cat on to the cat and then color each of the cats accordingly. In the end, I told her she did not need to number the cats as it messing with her coloring.  She asked about this herself.

Clues for Clothes

Megan had to read some sentences and fill in the blank for the type of clothes that best fits the sentence. Then, for two of the sentences Megan has to write which words helped her figure out which words to go into that particular sentence.

Like , sticks her arms through, made her think the word sweater goes in the blank.

Hot springs national park junior ranger

We went to Arkansas on our drive home from Alabama.  This was neat as Megan has not been since she was a baby.  We first looked at the hot spring coming out the ground.   Then , we walked to the visitor center.  along the way, we saw some notable water fountains .  There was one with blue green algae . It was hot water fountain and photographers love it in the early morning, as the steam would condense. This was neat to megan as the algae would not break off.  The Noble Fountain was a symbol of america with an eagle, a ball, and a emblem of the United States. Anyway megan was able to see some fountains.   Then , we walked a really pretty trail Hot Springs Mountain Trail.

In the junior ranger book, megan learned both the source of the water and how it was heated .  She did an activity where she labeled the steps in the life cycle of the water at Hot Springs. She also studied the different bath houses. She was given features of various bath houses and using pictures on the internet, she identified the various houses.  She also identified the stained glass that has a violin and is in the assembly room.

Lets go sell some Lemons

I was babysitting Lillian today and we were picking lemons. Our tree is covered with them. Well, when her mom came back around 1:30 p.m. , she saw all the lemons and suggested, you girls could sell some and make some money. There was a great flurry of excitement from both the girls. They searched for a stand, Donna made them a sign, I gave them a bin for a table. We got outside and then I realized we might do better on the move. Going around and advertising by way of mouth. Before this, I had Megan figure out well if we sell

4 lemons for $1.00, she said its one quarter and right now she practiced that one quarter is .25.

I also asked her if we give them 5 lemons for $1.00 , she guessed .20 ยข. She was right as 20 * 5 = 100 and there are 100 cents in a dollar.

I also asked her if 3 lemons for a dollar were more or less than 4 lemons for a $1.00.  She said that 3 for a 1.00 is more.
Megan read descriptions about animals and had to match the animal to the description on page 164.

On page 165, Megan had to Look at a beginning and ending of a scene of events and  predict what happened during the middle one and choose between two answers.

The boy had a kite and then then in the last one the kite was going up in the air. In the middle the boy must have opened his hand Megan said and so she selected "The boy dropped the string" rather than, "the boy took his kite home".

On page 167, Megan had to read a paragraph and then pick the sentence that answers the questions . She was given details about a house outside and what it has in and out of it and Megan had to choose what best lived in it. It was a doghouse and she said "a puppy".

Megan read a few sentences about fingerprints and then was given some true-false questions regarding the reading.

Why did it happen? Page 182

Megan had to read a sentence and then after that read two more sentences and choose the one that explains why the event is happening.

Example:

The soccer coach is cheering.

Her team lost the game
Her team won the game.  (Megan chose this one)

Chain of effects

This was a tricky one and at first Megan (with me watching over) did some of it wrong. When I told her that, we reread it again and paid more attention.

Megan read a story about a boy sulking on the bed as it was raining and he couldn't go out.  Then, she had to read the sentences and pick the right answer based on the story like

Tosh probably wants to go outside and play or lie in bed all day.

She did fine with this.

Then on page 179, She read a story and from that had to conclude what kind of animal one of the characters was . This was an inference about character. We had to read it twice. Once to hear it and once to read it more carefully.  Then, it asked to draw what the character Tom looked like. Megan started drawing a fish and so I read it again, having her think about it more clearly. She also had to circle the picture that best shows what the fish was thinking, a happy picture or a scared. The first was not afraid and happy her owners came home and so Megan picked the right picture, that is, one of a smiling fish.

Megan learned what an Inference was.  She was told that not every story tells all the facts.  Sometimes you need to put together details to understand what is happening in a story. When you put details together, you make inferences. She read paragraphs and then had to pick which one of the following statements could be inferred from the story.

She got all of the ones on page 177 right.

The teacher told us parents today they were still working on quarter notes and the quarter rest.  We went in and played instruments and did a dance where you moved altogether in and then altogether out and then you spun around. It was interesting.

they have to make a maraca for homework.

When we got here, we spent time seeing where Georgia was in respect to Alabama.  We also looked at the other states again.  Then , we went to play in the water area where Megan's imagination let loose.  We fished for fish.  We played with puppets, having an owl chase mice, a peacock complain that we were taking her eggs.  The peacock chased the mice whom started taking her eggs. We played making cake. We played in the room where you take balls up by basket and shoot them down into a bucket.

When we were done with that, we did a bit of reading charts on Alabama in the 1850s.   We read which jobs males had the most back then.  I will ask megan what she remembers, but I remember 66, 600 farmers, over 2000 merchants and laborers, and only two chemists.  We also learned there was popular fish was catfish and that they relied heavily on forest products.   We learned that dairy products were among their top commodity. They also produced a lot of sweet potatoes.  Alabama is also known , of course, for its cotton.

We also discussed the flat boat, the keel boat and the steam ship.  We went on a keel boat and examined pellets.   We had to guess at what they were , but we were right to probably beaver and raccoons. They had tools for hunting beavers and muskrats.

Megan also learned how they debated about where to put the first Alabama capital.  It ended up being in Cahawba, Alabama.  Then it moved to Tuscaloosa, and finally to Montgomery, where it is today.

Megan finally did some game where she guesses, by putting her hand in a  box, what is in that box.  That was in an event about  Helen Keller . We then played in a multi-tiered wooden doll house.

They have a wall of presidents and we studied them .
