Recently in Texas History Category

We went to Arkansas on our drive home from Alabama.  This was neat as Megan has not been since she was a baby.  We first looked at the hot spring coming out the ground.   Then , we walked to the visitor center.  along the way, we saw some notable water fountains .  There was one with blue green algae . It was hot water fountain and photographers love it in the early morning, as the steam would condense. This was neat to megan as the algae would not break off.  The Noble Fountain was a symbol of america with an eagle, a ball, and a emblem of the United States. Anyway megan was able to see some fountains.   Then , we walked a really pretty trail Hot Springs Mountain Trail.  

Today, in honor and to study Pirates, we took a ferry across galveston island to Fort Travis Seashore Park on the Bolivar Penisula.  We went to see this fort , which by the look of it, it will not be standing forever.  It is being overrun by nature and is not being cared for. This was my impression.  We learned that this fort has a lot of history associated with it, such as protecting the Spanish from the Karanakawa indians , Defense in the Spanish-American War,  and defense during WW1.


We learned about Dr. Long and his wife and daughter and 300 troops, who came to Texas in 1818 to help defend Texas against Spain.  His daughter was left behind with very little defense and they left when the weather got cold. She fired a canon every day to give the impression that the fort was defended.  Jane, in December, after her maid became very sick, delivered her third child, a girl named Mary and she was the english descent. Jane long, because of her perserverence and dedication, became known as the "Mother of Texas".  Jane left the following July after hearing about the death of her husband. 

During the civil war, fortifications on Bolivar Point was Fort Green, for the Confederate Soldiers.
