Life of Fred butterflies Ch. 10

This chapter continued the Orion Nebula and definition of a light year.  Then they played an alphabet game where you picked a topic and guessed a word for each letter, such as food or countries.  

Megan's problems were name a category that would be really hard to find one of each letter of. 

Megan said trees, daddy said continents.

On page 312, Megan is practicing skip counting by 5's , using tally marks to write a number, and doing a few simple addition problems.  On page 313, she has to write how many minutes given by the clock, and find the area of a rectangle by skip counting by 10's.  On page 314, Megan has to change the tally marks to a number, and do some basic addition problems and adding the tens place, 10+30 for example.  On page 315, she has to determine the hour as shown on the clock.  

Art walk with Audubon

This was a neat day. We walked and counted and identified birds.  Then , we looked at pictures of birds and all the kids tried to draw them. .  I think I have a picture of Megan's work .  I will upload it shortly.

Megan has to convert tally marks to a number and do some addition consisting of single digit addition and the addition of 10s, like 20 + 10.  On page 311, Megan has to give the minutes that are shown on a block clock and then find the area of box by skip counting, this time by 5s. 
We are continuing our study of habitats , and to support this , I have used both the 5-7 and 6-8 mbtp activities on is on body structures and one is on habitats. 



Mud trilogy

I bought trilogy because it uses stories on a lower level to introduce good vocabulary necessary to read the classics .  Megan has learned such words as profound, abyss, meloncholy , and countenance.

Megan is giving the minutes on a clock made in block form on page 308 and on page 309, she had to do the same thing, but also finding area by skip counting by 2s for a square and two rectangles.

Most excellent egg hunt

The kids got together and made paper bag baskets. Then , we went to the park and hid eggs and the kids searched for them.  Leslie had confetti filled eggs.  I read the book by Leo Lionni, the most extraordinary egg.

Pie chart of flower colors

We went to old city park In Friendswood and looked around for flowers and worked on classifying flowers. Then after naming them, we sorted them by color.  I worked on making a pie chart with Megan.  Here is our results.Wildflowers.jpg

Megan did a shapes logic puzzle . It was a new kind for her. She had to put the shapes in a grid according to a set of conditions.

I have recently joined this site and they have stories with questions afterward and Megan really likes these.   I downloaded a whole week of these.  One was a folk-tail about why bears have short tails, one is about playing baseball and others to come . Megan did well today and yesterday.

Megan is introduced to consonant-r blends, like tr , pr, br, fr
Given pictures, Megan has to pick the first two letters it starts with , like pretzel, broom, etc.  given a word, pg. 30, Megan has to read the word, x the picture it represents, and write the word.  On page 31,Megan has to pick the word that matches the picture, given two similar words, like track or tack.

We read a book about him and discussed basic genetics using his study on peas. 

Using a map grid

Given a map of the capital and cities in Ohio, Megan had to answer some questions. First what is the capital of Ohio.  The state of Ohio is broke down into squares and she had to answer questions related to the cities and the grid, such as what body of water is named in square C1.  Also she was asked general questions, such as what forms the southern border of Ohio. Page 33 Evan -moor geography.

Two pages on basic addition . She had to count two sets of ordinary items and add them together. Pages 203-204.

Making purple cabbage pasta

Our science project today was make purple pasta or try to using purple cabbage.  The dough was too wet and perhaps I need to get the processor to chop the pieces up more as the pieces were big and cut the dough.  I also do not need to add any water as the cabbage supplies enough.  

Scholastic 100 words

Working with the words "my" , "me", "am", and "I have" .  Follow the paths of the word my from the girl to the cat. 

Pg. 58 read the sentences and put the word "my" in the blanks, 

Pg. 59 read the sentences and match the sentence to the picture. 

Pg. 60 read the sentences and place the word "me" in the sentences.

Pg. 61 read the sentences and match the sentences to the proper fruit. 

Pg. 63 write different words by switching around letters, such as "a" to "am"  and "am" to "my" .

Very first last time

 We started a book on the article tundra.  Some of the characteristics of this tundra- it is a very cold region , no trees,you could see snow for miles around.  They used dogs to pull sleds, they hunted animals for the hides, and they dug in the ice for mussels.  When the girl went below the ice she also saw some figures drawn on the walls.  She also saw more animals like a pinky crab,shrimp, barnacles, and she touched anemones.  


We watched a short BBC clip showing people digging through the ice for mussels. 

In both the short movie and the book , they had to be concerned with the tide coming back in.  The movie said they had about 30 minutes. 

Some animals we predict might live in this environment may be Bears, polar bears,foxes,

Explode the code book 2, pgs. 19-21, and 23

All about constant letter r blends, cr, dr, gr, etc.  page 19,pick two letter combination that starts the word for the picture shown. Then  on page 20,, given a row of words, "X" the same word. For me, she has to read all the words given. On page 21 , given  pictures, and its word, she has to "X" the word that matches the written word and write the word. 

On page 23' given pictures and a choice of words, she has to write the word that matches each of the given pictures. 

Magic school bus makes a rainbow

Learns about prisms and why we see the colors around us. This book fits in well with our light unit.
