In discussing explorers ( early) , we discussed and made a compass. We took a needle and rubbed it in one direction for about 40 times.well rubbing it 20 times was not as good. Also the first day, we put it on a thin plastic from a yogurt cup top. This had its advantage as one could see the needle wobbling as it searched for the north direction. Then our latest method has to be doing the same thing between two corks..

I am periodically going over < and > with Megan. She did a page of this with various numbers from in the tens place, 19 -90 was the range of numbers compared. I am teaching her that the tens place is used at first, but if this place value is the same, say 23 and 29, then the units place determine which number is bigger. I was deciding what crafts to do for early explorers. Megan wanted to make a telescope. We looked this up and realized this came later than our current explorers, de vaca, Coronado, and even La Salle. We then looked up a compass and read it was first created by the Chinese, probably during the Qin dynasty (221-206 B.C.).We then read about lodestones, which were invented around 850-1050 A.D.A loadstone was a mineral containing iron oxide which aligned itself in a north -south direction.
So we studied compasses and made one by rubbing a needle against a magnet 20-40 times in the same direction. It then aligned along the North -south direction.
Megan colored in a flower based on answer to addition problem on page 208 and a complex bird puzzle on page 209. She loves to color so why not reinforce math at the same time.

What numbers add up to 10. I had her work with blocks to visualize this. Then I tried to teach her, using place value blocks, that when you add a number to ten, 9 and less, it just becomes 1x, with x being the number added. Like your x is your number of units and your 1 is your ty or tens place. All the will need repetition of course. Also, she would ask what is 10 + 20 and I would pull out 10 blocks and say that is like adding the tens place without any units ( math-u-see's ones place). She seemed to understand this, but again repetition is key.
