Whales versus fish

I started working with her counting and learning the
 body parts.  I am making cards where I put the written name on one card and a picture on the other. I will ask our neighboring I am pronouncing the words right.

Pgs 38-39, short vowels A and I, introduces the word add. Previously it introduced the word hill. 
Read two of these stories, Tobias and the dragon and a donkey's load.  I had Megan try and predict what was going to happen in the story.  There is a definite pattern as the ordinary guy makes the dragon believe he is stronger, but basically Tobias plays on the dragon's fears.  The other one, a donkey's load, a poor person is cheated out of his donkey's saddle and plays a trick on the person to get it back. We discussed both of these stories.

Back to encouraging 30 min of exercise.  Stressing good eating habits and discussed my plate and 10 ways to stay healthy.  I always talk about health to Megan , that is low sugar, salt, whole grains, protein, calcium, eating different color vegetables and fruits.

Discussed early explorers

We were discussing Jamestown and early colonization of America. We are discussing a timeline for north America colonization. So far we have native Americans, Christopher Columbus (1492), an earlier colony searching for trade routes and whom set up a colony on north America whom died (1500s), then explorers from England in 1607 founding Jamestown.

Practiced North-South-East-West on a sheet and started a sheet discussing symbols. She is aware of symbols because our house is full of maps.  We pull them out and she asks questions.

Did two pages explode the code and one in the complete phonics curriculum book. The latter has her fill in the middle vowel if she hears the specified in the word.  

Reading tall tales- Paul Bunyan

We read this story and discussed main areas on the Map as we went. I also asked Megan what was real and what was imaginary.  We also discussed this character's problem, why was he larger-than-life, funny or impossible elements,action, and his triump. 

Collected and compared playing balls and sorted

We studied a bunch of balls and compared them and described the balls by their attributes.  Then we arranged the balls from the smallest to the largest, being my workout ball. This took some thought as some of the balls were close. 

Writing words for numbers

We studied several chemicals around the house and fruits, and recorded their color and pH. She practiced writing by writing her colors and the pH.

Elections

Megan and I discussed the purpose of having a president, the creation of our constitution, the purpose of voting, the bill of rights and why they were necessary. We also talked about amendments and how it was to add one and that 18'have been added,m the last one being Added in 1922.  It was interesting to read that the limit of a president to two four year terms was an amendment was interesting. That is, he can only elected twice.

Hot, sunny with some clouds.

Yeast balloon

Megan did a yeast balloon experiment. She labeled her experiment, wrote the date, describe using her five senses, the ingredients, and wrote and learned new words, such as inflate, bubbles, bigger, yeast, and sugar. She predicted what was going to happen and wrote a fair share of it down.  I am letting her guess how to spell things..

They also have to understand the effect of heat and cold.  Megan saw a piece of butter melting on the counter She noted its appearance and said it was melting. I asked her why,She said it was because of the heat in the house.

More social studies came in when discussed difference in climate and how other people lived. I said f it were colder, would the butter melt like this so quickly. She said most likely not.  So we discussed some other aspects of climate, like gardening and crops.

Folktales versus fairy tales

I asked Megan why they wrote fairytales. She said for fun and enjoyment. She did not have any idea what a folktales was and so I discussed it with her briefly. I am checking out a book and then I will revisit this topic.  We did, however, read Davy crocket and I helped her think about acting it out.

Today as with everyday, Megan read a calendar, put up the current date, and wrote her name, date, day of week, and recited her phone number. We also reviewed our address. 

I also reviewed the needs she thinks a person needs. She says food, water, air, sunshine, shelter from the weather. I revisited how the Indians obtained this.

This is a book that sequentially helps with reading. Megan wrote some words in it and chose the right sentence, by reading them, to describe a picture that was shown.

Social Studies

This passed week or so, Megan and I have studied some of the current Texas Indians, ths Caddo, the Comanche, and the Karankawa. Today, we started a book. Megan did the drawings and helped me with the text.

We learned during this about the different areas they lived, what they ate, what kind of dwelling they lived in, their signifance to Texas history, etc.
