Comparing time of travel with the cost of travel

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I was doing a project with Megan where we decided on a destination. Then , we looked at all the possible ways of traveling there, car, plane, train, etc to determine the bestway to get there. We looked at the time it would take us to get there, the cost, etc. Here is one of our sheets of calculations. Comparingtravelmethods.jpg
Megan worked on this book for these months and finished at the end of July 2013.
Megan worked on this book for these months and finished it early February 2013.
We were studying the process of the mail system, that is what happens to our mail after we mail it. So, we were interested in how the price of stamps changed over time, from 1917. Costofpostalstamps.jpg
The kids at Stephanie's chemistry had to do a taste test on several foods to say if it were sweet, salty, or neither. Reading a weather chart and a newspaper

Megan picked up the weather forecast section of the newspaper and started to interpret it's meaning. She saw the top part which was telling me the temperature of our current location and then compared it to other states, including Texas. Then she saw different colors under this map and said mom what temperatures are these. I do not see them on the map. I said wait this is for the maps below . We looked at it and between the legend and the title a and told her this is a precipitation map. She said "oh man, we are going to have thunderstorms everyday but today ( Monday). Then later she says , mom look

Large bin feeding

Today I fed the worms 0.68 g  of rotten seedless Sam's club cucumbers.  I am curious how long it takes them to eat it. Their are about 2 lbs of worms so they should be able to eat 1 lb.  of food, which is about 463 grams. I have yet to feed them this as its a new bin. When they finish what they have, I will feed them more.

Johnson Space Center Physics day

Megan and I went to the Johnson Space Center on Nasa Road today. I wasn't going to go as it didn't pique my interest enough. Well it did, but these days, I have to pick and choose activities more wisely. But, a few people commented this was great and it was. Megan learned about Centrifugal force, gravity, momentum (angular) , friction, gyroscopic stability, inertia, to name a few. Some of this was while watching a Science Circus.

She was also introduced to Albert Einstein and his theory of Relativity in laymen's terms (kid-friendly introduction). She was also introduced to other scientists before Einstein, like Galileo, Isaac Newton (which she was familiar with) and James Maxwell, to name a few. She learned why Einstein was so famous.

To end it , we saw a science comedian. He was really funny. In this, Megan asked him if the world today contained more oxygen like it did in the Prehistoric past, would the world be more explosive. He said she was half right, so she gets partial credit. But, he said, you are small, so partial credit is all you need!!

After this, we went on a walk and I told Megan more about Albert Einstein. I am going to get some kids book on him as he has always been a person of interest to me.

Megan worked all this past week on a project to enter into the Orange Show in Houston. The main point didn't have to be peeps, but they had to be part of the focus. So, Megan had two characters from "Secrets of Droom, book 26, the Moon Dragon" fighting the dragon on top of a school house.  The two main characters were peep rabbits. For Sparr , she painted the ear's purple to represent his fins on his head.  For Eric, the normal kid character in the book, she cut off the ears completely as he doesn't fins. She build the dragon out of Sculpty and decorated an empty wood box and a house red with brown strips. On the tip of the house, was a clock, to give the image of a school house.  The normal people in the town were peep chickens.

Peeping the Environment Clean

Next year, Megan wants to do a canoeing /fishing/ cleaning up combo scene.  Her idea is the have a cardboard box that looks like a normal diorama , but in the front where you would look there would a blue plastic piece plexiglass.  Then, in water would be trash along with fish and other freshwater creatures.  The peeps would be both fishing and picking up trash. Only one peep would be fishing, representing a mischievious one. The other two or three would have nets and trash bags and picking up trash. She wants three canoes.  Odd number of peeps. The fishing peep has his/her own canoe.
