Winston's Infini-D Model Rendering Gallery [West Wing]

Welcome to the West wing, where the collection of still rendered images of three dimensional objects are kept and displayed for your enjoyment.

The following images are rendered model's created in Specular Infini-D 3.5 or in some of the more recent cases in MetaCreations' Infini-D 4.5 by yours truly. Hope you enjoy them. Please be patient while the pictures load. There are quite a few of them and they're worth the wait. Adobe Pagemill 3.0 estimates this page will take about 2. minutes to download at 28.8k. If you can't wait that long, perhaps you'd prefer the thumbnails available in the Holdings catalog.

I was on a "Model-a-day" schedule (as you can tell by looking at the dates of creation).

Don't forget to sign the guest book to let me know that you've stopped by.

Fruit Bowl

April 28th, 1997

This is my get to know Infini-D 3.5 exploring the new spline based modeler for the bowl and the apple. (The banana is a template.) The orange texture still needs some work, and the apple needs a stem.

Basil Flatrock Emblem

April 29th, 1997

This is a recreation of my emblem. The object modeler in Infini-D 2.6 couldn't properly produce the shape I wanted for the rock. At least *I* couldn't get it to model the rock properly. Click on the Emblem to see a larger version

Candlelight and Wine

April 30th, 1997

This model is my experimentation with the"Superflares" option and using lights as part of the scene. Also the wine in the glass is a result I was trying to achieve.

Halogen Lamp w/ Wall

May 1st, 1997

This is a recreation of a Halogen lamp I have in my living room. Xiao-ping suggested I model that when ask what I should try to recreate. Using the white plastic plane walls is to further simulate reality. Also I'm continuing to experiment with lights and superflares.

Crapshoot

May 2nd, 1997

I've discovered boolean operations. That's the point of this model. For those of you that aren't familiar with the terms. Boolean operations allow different objects to be added to or subtracted from. In this case the "pips" are subtracted from the die body.

Clock

May 3rd, 1997

Nothing terribly special about this piece. Only combining animated GIF's using GIF Builder and Infini-D. Click on the clock to see time pass (Animated GIF [288k,12 sec])

Computer Desk

May 4th, 1997

This is a replica of the computer desk my dad made for me. Go to the Computer Page to see a photo of my computer on the desk. I'm playing with the textures in this model. Making sure the grains on the wood faces the right way.

Desk Light

May 5th, 1997

This model is somewhat based on the lamp I have on my desk. This model was my exploration of the spline modeler. The curved neck of the lamp. Also the tapered base was briefly experimented with. The chrome switch has it's centerpoint changed. And the pen and paperclip holders are subtracted from the base. Clicking on the switch will turn it on. (Animated GIF [45k,1 sec])

MacAddict 3-Eyed Alien

May 6th, 1997

In the June 1997 issue of MacAddict there is a set of How-To instructions for creating an alien in a space saucer using Specular's Logomotion. (Their low-end product). On the right is the result following step 8. Tomorrow I'll create the saucer and pose the alien. The model is made completly of spheres. (well I used a cylinder for his neck).

If you don't know, green and purple are the colors of the MacAddict Magazine. There's a purple fringe on the alien. Really honest! (The rendering background is purple and it got anti-aliased in. If I hadn't made the background transparent if would have probably been too much clashing of colors.)

MacAddict Alien Ship

May 7th, 1997

This is the companion space ship to the alien above. This is following result following step 9. Ok so I modified it a little: the needles in the nacelles, and the extra sphere to make up the body. Once again the purple background is reflected in the body. Like the Alien, the ship is made entierely out of modified spheres. The ship should be reunited with the alien tomorrow.

MacAddict Alien with Ship

May 8th, 1997

Well as promised here's the alien with the ship as mentioned before this is the result of the June 1997 MacAddict magazine of how to make easy 3D objects. Manipulating the alien's hand to grap the control bar was a lot harder than I thought. (Of course all those sphere's made my Quadra crawl. :(

Secret City Scape

May 9th, 1997

When I was younger I used occasionally watch a TV show entitled Secret City, it was a show that taught how to draw three-dimensional futuristic buildings and city scapes, it really stressed perspective and vanishing points. This scene is a tribute to that show and my intrests as a 6th grader. Many enviornment attributes were played with including fog and amibiant light. I'm also exploring the "loft" object, infact all the buildings except for the foremost are each just a modified "loft" shape.

Rainbow Spray Paint

May 10th, 1997

The colored dot on the side of the can are actually the intersection of two perpendicular cylinders. I know I could have just mapped an "pict" file onto the can, but I wanted to try to do it all within Infini-D.

End Table with Alarm Clock

May 11th, 1997

Julie suggested I try to model an end table with an alarm clock. So here it is. You can't tell, but the LED lights exist even for the ones that are off.

Joules in the Sky Banner

January 23rd, 1998

I created the banner for Julie's homepage which is work in progress. I like the fire in the sky look to it. Both textures are "Marble" surfaces.

Lamp

January 24th, 1998

The neat thing about this lamp is the translucent lamp shade. Through it you can see the light bulb as well as the three supports for the lamp shade itself. Also the reflective and refractive nature of the glass plate the lamp is sitting on is pretty neat.

Flower Pot

January 25th, 1998

No it isn't supposed to be any particular flower. Just a generic 'lilac' colored blossom in a flower pot. I haven't quite figured out how to make a proper blossom, but this isn't too bad a representation. I used several concentric "twist"ed octogons to achieve the current effect. I would also like a better texture for the leaves and stem. If you do happen to know of a flower that looks like this one please let me know.

Navigator Wheel

January 26th, 1998

In search of inspiration, I launched Netscape, and lo and behold, I had my next modeling project. It took me a long while to get the sky and the water to be the right colors. The sky has a low density 'noise' texture that glows, and the water is a reflective texture with a wave effect. The wood is oak. Click on the picture to see the sky and shadows move. Herbal Essences® Shampoo

January 27th-28th, 1998

I was working on a model of my shower stall, but that is taking longer than expected. Meanwhile, I've whipped up a bottle of shampoo that I use.

On the left is the model I made based on what I thought the shampoo bottle to looked like, on the right is the model I made with the bottle sitting next to me. It's missing a few decals, and the flip top still isn't quite right but i'ts much better.

Herbal Essences Shampoo
Why Herbal Essences? Cause my parents both work for Clariol that's why. Besides it's great shampoo, you should try it. All my friends who have, use it regularly now.

Soap Holder w/ Shower Knobs

January 29-30th, 1998

Continuing to work on the shower stall scene, I made a close up of the soap holder, there's nothing too special about this piece other than the tile background which is one piece, and made by beveling a 3x3 set of square columns.

I've combined the soap holder with the shower knobs.

Bookrack

January 30th, 1998

All this modeling that I've done lately has generated the intrest of my roommate Julie. So together with her as a tutorial we recreated a book rack that was on the desk. The newest thing is the use of a "shadow catcher" to show the shadows of the books. It's kinda hard to notice. But underneath the algerbra book is a shadow that hasn't fallen on any obvious surface.

Book Rack
The real bookrack was made and sold by me in High school as part of the Junior Achievement program, and is holding CD jewel boxes, not high school texts.

Shower Stall

Feburary 1st-4th, 1998

Well it's done. The shower stall. It includes all of the elements from the past few days. The shampoo bottle on the floor in the left rear of the stall, the knobs and soap holder on the left wall. A walkthrough of the scene is available as a brief Animated Gif (520K) and as a more elaborate Quicktime Movie (1.6Mb)

Definitly view the animated gif, and if you have time and the bandwidth download the movie too. Be sure to notice the reflections in the tile wall. This shower however contains no fluids. (no H20, and the Shampoo doesn't flow)

Candy Dish

Feburary 2nd, 1998

I've discoverd the Object Library and turned a lamp shade into a candy dish. I then made the cellophane wrappers for the candy. I think I can use the technique for more realistic looking flowers.

Gossamer Pond

Feburary 5-11th, 1998

Ok so I took my time to model this. I took a break after the shower scene. And I wanted to do this right.

The monitor is modified from the object library. For the first time in this Gallery, I've used an external program prior to rendering. The front panel of the computer has a bump map, and a color map made in Adobe Photoshop. The desktop is a screen shot of an Infini-D scene of this model. It was Phillipe's idea.

This is my new computer Gossamer Pond, it is a Apple Power Macintosh G3 233MHz Desktop, for more information check out Gus's computer page. Who is Gus you ask? See the next model below.

Galapa Gus

September 5th, 1998

I've started using Infini-D 4.5. So I imagine my next few models will be exploring the new features.

To create the texture on the top half of the shell, I first created a series of hexagonal rounded pyramids, and applied a yellow-green gradient (created in Photoshop). Rendered the top view and then cropped the rendered pict to the smallest repeating unit. I then "fractal wrapped " the cropped image onto the top shell object.

Galapa Gus
This turtle is an approximation of a Gund stuffed animal named Galapa Gus given to me by Shari. So if it doesn't look biologically accurate that's why. The 'real' stuffed animal sits on top of computer, Gossmaer Pond. Clicking on Gus will bring you to the GalapaGus QTVR gallery that offers 360° view of the model. [290K]

Spot

September 27th, 1998

Like its real life counterpart, this model is more of a carving than a model. The body is one object, with 4 different negative booleans (the nose and tail trims, and the ear and feet separators. The tongue, collar and name tag are separate objects. The body surface is a composed surface of an image map and noise surface

Clicking on Spot will bring you to Spot VR gallery, with offers a 360° view of the model [270K]

Spot
The real life Spot was carved out of soft pine on July 10th, 1990 when I was at Camp Sequassen teaching Arts & Crafts for the BSA. Visit Flatrock's Garden for other incarnations of Spot.

Infinity

September 29th, 1998

The möbius strip on the left is in the Infini-D's object galley. While the one on the right is one that I created using a path extrusion with a twist. The surface is two noise surfaces tiled together.

I plan on using the infinity shaped möbius strip as a icon for this gallery.

Infinity

Pyramid

December 9th, 1998

I admit this may not look like much, but this actually looks pretty cool animated so be sure to see the Quicktime movie (142K, 6 sec). I was looking on the desktop of Julie's computer where I saw a triangle icon (The trash can from the Ozymandis II Kaleidescope scheme) superimposed over Netscape Navigator and that looked like sun rays behind a pyramid.

Pyramid

Traffic Light

December 10th, 1998

To achieve the green light effect instead of using real lights, I used spheres with "glow" surfaces values, this way the various lights don't illuminate the rest of the scene. The wire at the top is a "twisted" extrusion of two tangential circles, the light covers were the hardest parts to model, I finally was able to do it in the "freeform horizontal" layout. The surface of the globes have a bump effect, and the surface of the traffic light has a corrosion effect. (I seem to have misrembered that the green light is on the bottom. :)

In the North Wing you can see the sequence of lights (21K, 1 sec), and in the East Wing is a Quicktime VR version (147K).

Slide

December 11th, 1998

The slide and the handle bars are path extrusions, Everything else is either a cylinder or a plain extrusion, The use of a "Shadow Catcher" is more apparent here, it serves as the ground.

Swing Set

June 18th, 1999

Here is a Swing set in the corner of the playground, The sand patches are negative booleans, and the mountians in the background are long thin terrain objects, The leaves on the trees are particle emitters outside a regular primitive (otherwise the leaves won't cast shadows. The chain link fence is a composed object, using transparent layers in the textures.

Swing Set with Girl

July 12th, 1999

Here I used Metacreations Poser 4.0 to added the girl to the scene, I also soften the shadows, so that various details didn't get blacked out.
