Day 11: Columbus, OH to Glasgow, KY
Thursday Oct. 30, 2008
After Breakfast at Billie and April’s Apartment, we checked out Billie’s new CRV, and then got on the road just before 10:30 AM. Our destination for the evening was the Hall Bed and Breakfast in Glasgow, KY. Along the way we’d stop and see the state capitols of Ohio and Kentucky. We also wanted to see the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace, National Historic Site.
We first drove by Billie’s school The Ohio State University, and the stopped by the Ohio State House and Senate Building. Winston walked around it and took some pictures, it’s interesting to see that the capitol is surrounded by large skyscrapers on all sides. We then headed south and had Lunch at Wendy’s and topped off (5.247 gal at $2.04/gal) just outside of Cincinnati. We then crossed over the Ohio river and head south to Frankfort. The state house at Frankfort is on the flats of Kentucky River, and has a Tree lined street leading up to it. We arrived around 3:30 in afternoon, so it was backlit by the sun, and hard to see the details clearly. The residential neighborhoods that surround the capitol make for a stark contrast to the Ohio State capitol.
We raced through the small state highways and passed by Abraham Lincoln’s childhood home without stopping. (We’d read you can only see the outside even when it’s open), and found ourselves outside the entrance of Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace at 5:30 EDT and the front gates locked. We’d missed it by half an hour. Saddened we continued driving to Glasgow, where our bed and breakfast reservations were. On the bright side, the rolling hills and fields made for a very pretty drive. We arrived at our destination at 6:15 PM, daily driving total of 300 miles.
The Hall Bed and Breakfast in Glasgow is located right off the main square of the town which features a courthouse in the center of the square. Around the square are various shops and lawyer offices. Most everything was closed by the time we went for a stroll after dinner. We ate at “a Little Taste of Texas” which we found ironic living in Texas, but the food was tasty and we actually had dessert take-out on the next night from there.
Our room at the B&B was huge, and we throughly enjoyed our stay, although by virtue of the face it was next to the town square, there was plenty of road noise in the mornings.
