Day 10: Barberton, OH to Columbus, OH

Fred and Mary Ann made a delicious country breakfast, and showed off their new barn they had built. The snow was dusty and the wind was blowing the flurries about. We had two goals for the day. The first goal for the day was to pick our own apples from an Apple Orchard. Turns out it was rather late in the year and most of the orchards near Akron no longer had pick your own apples. The second goal was to make it to Columbus, OH where Billie and April lived.

Our first attempt was the Rittman Orchard in Doyleston, OH. Fred and Mary Ann led us there. We left their house just before 1 pm , and arrived 15 minutes later, but they only had pick you own already picked apples from bins. They did however have a pick your own pumpkin patch, which we did. Since it was cold, Megan was all bundled up in her Purple Coat, and looked like a plum among the pumpkins. Also April had requested “Honey Crisp” apples which Rittman Orchard did indeed have so we pick up a bag of them. Heading back to the car, we realized that Julie didn’t have her winter jacket, and had left it back at Fred and Mary Ann’s place so we back tracket, and did another web search for Apple orchards. We settled on the Granville Orchard which is much closer to Columbus and we set out again and it was just after 2 pm. We stopped for gas along the way and added 9.989 gals @ $2.30/gal near Lodi.

It was just after 4:30 when we pulled into the Granville Orchard were holding their Orchard Clean-up, which meant the selection was past prime, but the prices were very reasonable. $5 for a plastic bag full of Apples. We picked up a wide variety of apples including Red & Golden Delicious, Empire, Winesap, Fuji, Cortland... etc. One facinating thing about he Granville orchard is that you can drive your car around the orchard, so you can use it as a moving base as you select different types of apples. They also have a very pretty pond, and lots of geese were around. We were fascinated as we watch them take off en mass when we got too close. We picked apples from about 90 minutes and then drove to Columbus.

We arrived in Columbus around 6:45, total milage for the day was 190 mile. Billie and April have a very nice and cozy apartment. They made us Ratatouille and corn on the cob for dinner, and we talked and relaxed after dinner.
