Megan supplied words to make a compound word, evergreen, playground, nightmare, cornmeal, eastward, shareware.  Then, she read a paragraph and answered the questions. She had trouble with one of them , but I reasoned with her about the answer.  Then, she had to read sentences and answer (a or an) for each of them. Then, she had to complete a set of analogy like candy:sweet:: lemon: sour.

Then, she had to put the words of a sentence in the correct order.  Finally, she had to read sentences and pick the correct form of the verb (is, are, am).

On the top of page 60, Megan has to read a story and then answer questions about the story. She did this very well.

Then, given a word, she had to put in the missing letters to finish spelling the words. She was going to spell coin , coyn. You can see that she thought "oy" made this middle sound. I had to tell her that "oi" is right in this case and it makes the same sound.

Jack in the beanstalk

We read Jack and the beanstalk by Steven Kellogg.  We characterized Jack as Brave, but he also showed attributes of being clever and maybe a bit cunning or sneaky. He was brave in that he climbed the tall bean stalk and face an mean looking later and went into the house an ogre when he could have been eaten.  Each time he does, he manage to take some of the ogre wealth. The first was a bag of gold, the second was a golden hen, and finally he took a harp. After this last time, he had to cut the plant down because the ogre was after him.  Upon returning the second and third , he shows signs of clever or cunning. The second time, he avoids knocking.  When he sees the lady, she says didn't I see you before. My master has this problem about a missing bag of gold. He tells her , I might know something but I can't tell you until my stomach gets full.  So she lets him in and gives him something to eat.

Megan wrote a letter to the character Jack telling him that she liked the story. She also told him which part of the story she likes best, which was when he believed the elderly guy and traded a good milking cow for 5 beans.

The House at Pooh Corner

We are working on understanding the Title, Characters, Setting, Problem, and Solution.  We read the first two stories, "A house is built at Pooh Corner for Eeyore" and "Tigger Comes to the Forest to have Breakfast".  We drew ovals on paper and described each of these story elements.  We have Pooh and Tigger there listening.
We read a reading comprehension discussing the invention of the pencil.  Megan woke up asking who invented this. Turns out the British in the 16th century were the first to find graphite, which pencils were made of.
