Day 14: Belmont, MS to Jackson, MS
Sunday Nov. 02, 2008
A nice self-serve breakfast at the Belmont Hotel and we got back on the Natchez Trace Parkway at 9:00 am. Once again we started by backtracking, and going up north for a bit until we reached the John Coffee Memorial Bridge crossing over Tennessee River in Alabama (Mi 328). It’s a pretty wide river, and we took photos on both side of the river.
We then went for a short hike on the Freedom Hills Overlook (Mi 317), and saw a wide vista of fall foliage and the smoke of far off fires.
We tried to find the James Whitten Lock and Dam Visitor center run by the Army Corp of Engineers, but it was closed and we made several wrong turns along the way. We also wanted to stop at the Tishomingo State Park, but that required a fee, and we didn’t really have the time.
We did walk along the interpretive trail at Donivan Slough (mi 283), and saw some trees and plant of the wetlands.
The visitor center in Tupelo (mi 266) is the park headquarters, and we looked at the exhibits there, and made a small detour to see the Tupelo National Battlefield. The Battlefied turned out to be a small patch of land with a couple of cannons on it. We didn’t even bother to get out of the car.
Our final stop of the day on the parkway was at Jeff Busby (mi 193). We watch the setting sun there, and Megan played peek-a-boo with Mommy among the tall trees in the field.
Dinner was at Chili’s Bar and Grill in Jackson which was accross the highway from our room at the LaQuinta North Jackson. We stayed there on our Great Megan Tour SE, and the price of $39 a night was just unbeatable. We drove 275 miles that day.
